PALAMIX – the next generation: Mixing and collecting under vacuum – now with spatula clip

The optimized PALAMIX® vacuum mixing system is the secret behind optimal processing of Heraeus bone cements.

It makes vacuum mixing and application of bone cement more convenient: both the mixing of the components and the collection of the bone cement is carried out under vacuum. A new spatula clip allows for the simple cement application in TKA.

Bone cements were used in orthopaedics and trauma surgery since the 1950s. PMMA based bone cement is primarily used for mechanical anchorage of implants in bone. The addition of an antibiotic to the bone cement is a game changer in the fight against periprosthetic joint infections. PALACOS® R+G is produced at Heraeus Medical GmbH in Wehrheim, sold in more than 90 countries and used in more than 34 million procedures worldwide. The success of PALACOS® R+G is not only based on its unique polymer structure, which allows great antibiotic elution and thus leads to lower revision risks in knee and hip arthroplasty. Also, its mechanical properties lead to a stable fixation of the implant and increase the implant longevity in the bone. Let’s go back to 1969 where Prof. Dr. Buchholz, St George Hospital Hamburg, and Heraeus (Kulzer) GmbH were the first to consider adding an antibiotic to PMMA cement. The first results were encouraging – it seemed like the added antibiotic, Gentamicin, reduced the incidences of infections after arthroplasty. In order to minimize contamination during manual admixing of gentamicin powder to the PMMA cement, Prof. Buchholz and Heraeus started to develop the first industrially manufactured antibiotic loaded bone cement – in 1972 PALACOS® R+G was born. Today, 50 years after its invention, PALACOS® R+G became the gold standard. Although PALACOS® R+G offers a reliable product quality due to its unique structure, the real recipe of success lies in the people behind the product.
